Different combinations of the following parameters were varied: number of beds, inlet temperature to each bed, bed depth and air dilution before each bed. The optimization techniques used and compared for efficiency were: dynamic programming, gradient search, Hooke and Jeeves' pattern search and the discrete maximum principle. The optimum conversions were found to be quite insensitive to considerable variation in feed temperature, air dilution and catalyst distribution. An improvement in the plant conversion of 0.25% was predicted. On a procédé à l'optimisation d'un réacteur adiabatique à lits multiples qui servait à l'oxydation catalytique de l'anhydride sulfureux; on a utilisé à cette fin un crítère de transformation maximale et des données obtenues de l'usine de la compagnie Canadian Industries Ltd., à Hamilton, Ontario. On a eu recours à différentes combinaisons des paramètres suivants: nombre de lits, température d'admission à chaque lit, profondeur des lits et dilution de l'air devant chaque lit. On a employé les méthodes suivantes d'optimisation et a comparé leurs rendements: programmation dynamique, recherche du gradient, recherche du diagramme d'Hooke et Jeeves et principe maximum de discontinuité. On a trouvé que leg transformations optimales n'étaient pas du tout affectées par une variation considérable dang la température d'alimentation, la dilution de l'air et la distribution du catalyseur.
