- W2163422597 abstract "In an article in the August 1988 issue of The Journal of Sex Research, Edward H. Kaplan (1988) concludes that the data presented by Masters, Johnson, and Kolodny are consistent with a heterosexual epidemic only if new partnership formation rates exceed 5.28 per year. There is an erroneous assumption in his calculations. His estimation of this critical number is based upon per partnership risks of transmission between an infected and a susceptible of 2 and 2.8% for transmission from an infected female and male respectively. These estimates are in turn based upon 11.88 and 11.23 sex acts per partnership. There is no adjustment in his critical number for the fact that as new partnership formation rates go down, the number of sex acts per partnership will go up. If the duration of a partnership is four years, let us assume that there will be 500 sex acts per partnership. Then, using Kaplan's equation 1, the probability of transmission from male to female will not be 2.8% but rather 71%, and the probability of transmission from female to male will be 57%." @default.
