- W2163733229 abstract "The field of U.S. diplomatic history has lately been overrun by culture vultures, gender heads, theory heads, even users of the “D” word – discourse. The writing of these “culturalists,” as they have been dubbed, has appeared in monographs, anthologies, and journals (including this one) that were once devoted to more traditional methodologies.1 As a modest contributor to this trend, I would like, first, to sketch brieflya few of the sources and ideas behind culturalist diplomatic history, and then offer a case study of this sort of work, one based on my research on U.S.-South Asia relations during the period 1947–1964, during which Jawaharlal Nehru served as prime minister and foreign minister of India. In this essay, I will discuss the role of religion in the American-South Asian relationship. I will argue that religious thinking infuses states, in this case the United States, India, and Pakistan; that perceptions of others are shaped, in part, by how we understand others’ religions; and that religious thinking in all three nations influenced the policies each formulated regarding the others in the critical period 1947–1954." @default.
