- W2163890431 abstract "Research is the building block of all scientific fields, including dietetics. It is the supporting foundation of the clinical applications we use every day in practice. Each new discovery builds on previous discoveries and sets the stage for the future. The Vision Statement of our Strategic Thinking Initiative calls for members to “shape the food choices and impact the nutritional status of the public.” Research in the nutrition and food sciences is a key way for us to use our expertise to affect the public's health. Participants at the Research Agenda Conference, sponsored by the Council on Research in May 1992, identified future paths for dietetics research in 12 broad areas including nutrition monitoring, dietary guidelines, foodservice systems, environmental issues, and education. A summary of the review papers and research questions for exploration are on page 1045. The complete document, funded by a grant from Mead Johnson, will be available at Annual Meeting or may be purchased afterward through ADA's sales order department (800/877-1600, ext 5000). In a similar vein, my commentary explores forces that motivate research (p 981). Extending existing information and responding to the socioeconomic and political environment are two key forces that have prompted the current drive for research specific to women's health. In their book Megatrends for Women, Patricia Aburdene and John Naisbett predict that the 21st century will see the feminization of health care. They envision that: “A generation of women comfortable with their economic clout and schooled in the tactics of consumer pressure and political strategy will put women's health issues at the top of the nation's health care agenda” (p 142). That time is now. ADA is at the forefront of this exciting frontier. Our Nutrition & Health Campaign for Women will enhance scientific, political, and consumer awareness of the key health issues facing women today. Our focus, in particular, is on healthy weight and the linkages between diet and breast cancer, osteoporosis, and coronary heart disease. In the section of the Journal devoted to the campaign (pages 986–1014), distinguished RD scientists present what we know about these issues and pose challenging questions for future exploration. As new strides are made in the areas of women's health, dietetics, and nutrition research, people will be seeking someone to help them implement dietary changes and translate “scientific-ese” into plain English. That's where the practitioner steps in. Every day the National Center for Nutrition and Dietetics receives hot line calls from consumers who are interested in consulting an RD. To this end, ADA implemented the RD Referral System to make RD services more accessible. Right now the system is being marketed to consumers and physicians and is set up to respond to requests for patient and consumer counseling. For a small fee, you can list your name and specialties in the system so that callers in your geographic area will be referred to you. To obtain a registration form, call Division of Practice at 800/877-1600, ext 4773. A new feature in this issue—structured abstracts for research articles—is an example of how the Journal is committed to providing a forum for cutting-edge research, making it easier for readers to identify the salient aspects of a research article, and allowing for more ready comparison among research reports. Claude Bernard said: “Man can learn nothing except by going from the known to the unknown.” Today's unknown may be women's health issues, but there is a world of research questions waiting to be explored. At a loss for a topic? This issue of the Journal is teeming with exciting research questions in a multitude of areas. See the lists on the FYI page, in the commentary, in the articles related to the Nutrition & Health Campaign for Women, and in the research agenda conference summary. Find one that piques your interest and you may embark on an exciting life voyage of discovery with far-reaching effects on the health of our nation. Judith V.
