The emotional experiencie of bilingual clients seems to be diminished when they are speaking or switching into their second language and increased when they are speaking or switching into their mother tongue. This study tested this clinical observation in a double blind experimental counseling analogue design. Fifty-six Spanish-English fluent bilinguals were interviewed in both languages on similar level emotional topics. Measures of discomfort were taken through the State scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Emotional arousal was elicited by asking the participants to discuss a personal emotional topic. The results did not support the detachment effect hypothesis; language did not predict discomfort. Unfortunatelly, the emotional topics elicited low anxiety, which may explain the difficulties in rejecting the null hypothesis due to lack of dispersion of the data." @default.
