- W2164475747 abstract "Abstract Effective service learning requires an academic base a community need connected to that base, the opportunity for students to plan ways to meet that need and student reflection on the project and the learning. While hunger statistics, class discussion and films create an awareness of the gravity of the hunger problem, a hands-on confrontation brings reality. This philosophy led to a service-learning project for coordinated program dietetics students. The project was intentionally open ended. A local chef addressed the class on his experience of homelessness and hunger, children in local communities who are hungry and his efforts on their behalf. The students then proposed conducting a soup kitchen at the homeless shelter, They planned, organized and implemented one, reported costs, difficulties met and problems solved. The class identified additional needs of the shelter. Sanitation received a high priority. This priority was met when the class plus recruits volunteered to clean the shelter kitchen and explain sanitation requirements. Class discussion centered on the effects of homelessness and hunger on the victims, the nutrition/health implications and long term strategies to alleviate hunger in the community. Related future activities include working at a shelter fund-raiser and food bank." @default.
