- W2165541004 abstract "Although Dr. Lillian Moller Gilbreth (1878-1972) made substan tial contributions to the field of management, most business text books fail to mention her work. When textbooks do mention her, Lillian Gilbreth is typically treated as the wife of the famous motion study expert, Frank Bunker Gilbreth, and Mother of the twelve children detailed in the popular books and movies Cheaper by the Dozen and Belles on Their Toes. Even historians fail to recog nize the importance of her contributions to the development of management theory. For instance, such classic historical reviews as David Landes's The Unbound Prometheus, Alfred Chandler's The Visible Hand, and Kranzberg and Pursell's Technology in Western Civ ilization do not even mention the work of Lillian Gilbreth.1 Dr. Gilbreth was a pioneer. She was a researcher, a manage ment consultant, a prolific author, and a working mother. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Lillian Gilbreth was more con cerned about people than production rates. She developed work methods that help to increase the quality of life of the average employee. Many of these methods—including motion studies, employment planning, and performance appraisal interviews— are still widely used today. Moreover, Dr. Gilbreth focused much of her research on topics usually ignored by the management the orists of the early twentieth century. For instance, she examined ways in which to improve the work environments of women, the handicapped, and older employees." @default.
