Biological applications of synchrotron radiation to date have used x rays emerging from a beryllium window, and hence of relatively short wavelength—varying from about 3 keV (4 A) up to 25–30 keV (0.5–0.3 A). Using this radiation, K-shell absorption has been studied for elements with atomic number Z above 19 (potassium) to beyond Z = 42 (molybdenum). In the same range, L-shell absorption starts at Z = 45 (rhodium) and goes all the way through plutonium (Z = 94)." @default.
