How is it possible, he asks in one of his letters, to perceive and recreate the beauty and power of languages which are no longer heard?1 Yet on another occasion he answers his own question with a paradox, acknowledging that he first heard the word speak from the printed page while reading Virgil's Eclogues.2 To implement such a state ment?to foster and validate his own heritage as educator in mod ern terms?is a measure of the classical scholar's heightened re sponsibilities to his discipline. Classicists are limited to reading their authors, and only by teaching ancient texts as historians of ideas and critics of generous scope can they now fulfill their duty to their field and their students. They can and must prove that ancient texts, far from being well-turned-out period pieces to preface a sourcebook on Western civilization, have constant living value for today's world. The difficulties facing both student and teacher are many. The student must learn two abstruse languages for which native speakers no longer exist. Yet he must read enough in depth, on the under graduate level, for his authors (and hence his field of endeavor) to be meaningful. This assignment is especially rigorous for the growing numbers who come to the ancient languages during their college careers. The teacher who doubles as literary critic must first come to grips with words. The instruments are readier to hand than before. Computers make indices verborum with relative ease.
