- W216773556 abstract "The current Hungarian theatre is hardly known in the West. Few travelers from East or West have reported in detail or with accuracy, and what has been written goes largely unread, if one may judge by its lack of reverberations. Henry Popkin's one-page treatment in The Drama Review (Spring 1967, pp. 48-9) is erratic and supbrficial. A regular theatre column in the New Hungarian f)uarterly usually concentrates on one significant production, or on one aspect of theatre or written drama, without providing an overview of Hungarian theatre as a whole. For those who read Hungarian, a regular examination of the weekly issues of Film, Szinhaz, Muzsika (Film, Theatre, Music) might provide a fair bird's eye view but a comprehensive treatment is lacking even in Hungarian. AIagyar Szinhaztortenet, edited by Ferenc Hont (Budapest: Gondolat, 1962), devotes just over nine pages to post-World War II theatre, and gives no more than the bare outlines for a political history of the theatre. Ferenc Vogl's Theater in Ungarn, I945 bis I965 (Koln: Wissenschaft und Politik, 1966), on the other hand, is a severely critical (though in the main truthful) analysis of the political control exercised over the Hungarian theatre during the last twenty years. An excellent brief historical survey is provided by Paul Hernadi's article, ungarische Theater, included in Martin Hurlimann's Das Atlantisbuch des Theaters (Zurich, 1966). This present essay aims to introduce theatre-oriented people in the West to the current Hungarian theatre by means of a glimpse into the theatrical life of Budapest at the outset of the 1967-68 season." @default.
