- W2167753797 abstract "The increase in women's employment and lack of change in the gender division of domestic labour has led to recent interest in domestic outsourcing and to some states in the European Union developing policies to encourage this practice. This article compares the outsourcing of domestic cleaning in two countries with very different policy approaches to the issue, namely France and Britain. France has some of the most developed policies to encourage the outsourcing of domestic chores in the European Union, whereas the British state does not intervene in this area at all. It is discovered that, on average, marginally more French households outsource their domestic cleaning than British households, and that the main way in which French policy is influencing French household's decision-making in this regard is through the financial incentives it offers. It is found that other objectives of French policy, such as encouraging the modernisation of the supply of domestic services, are being fulfilled in Britain by commercial agencies and private enterprise." @default.
