- W2168122178 abstract "Oral rehydration therapy prevents death from acute watery diarrhea except in the most severe 1-3% of cholera cases. Poor countries have rapidly expanded their use of this treatment while wealthy nations use more hazardous hospitalization and intravenous therapy. The origin of rehydration treatment was from home or folk remedies; unfortunately they were often not constituted adequately to prevent deaths or to be effective without the hazards of hypertonicity or hypotonicity. Subsequently when orogastric glucose-electrolyte solutions with well defined boundaries of composition were administered to cholera patients it was shown that oral solution could successfully rehydrate and maintain hydration. This treatment administered by briefly trained volunteers dropped the death rate to less than 3% in Calcutta and where there was medical supervision and intravenous fluid was used for the most severe cases mortality was less than 1%. Since most households have cereals and salt for solutions except in famine conditions with the communication of present knowledge there should be few deaths due to acute watery diarrhea. Through research and technology new polymeric solutions can be produced and conveniently packaged at low cost to aid developing as well as developed countries in the use of oral rehydration therapy for diarrhea." @default.
