- W2168986989 abstract "The apparent simplicity of the anatomic and functional characteristics of the aorta has now been recognized to be misleading based on insights from modern imaging technology and on better understanding of the hydraulic principles that interact closely with the variety of diseases affecting the aorta. The medical community has begun to realize the complexity of aortic pathology in vivo and its often iridescent and ambiguous clinical presentation. Thus, in this scenario, diagnostic modalities such as transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and computed tomography (CT), including spiral CT and electron-beam CT, have all been shown to be useful to investigate the aorta, both in chronic disease and in acute aortic syndromes. Although still considered gold standard in acute and chronic aortic syndromes, contrast angiography is likely to be relegated to a complementary role considering the high sensitivity, specificity, and practical advantages of the emerging noninvasive techniques, in particular MR imaging.14, 21, 32, 60, 74, 78, 86 Yet none of these diagnostic modalities is ideal for all patients, and the choice of the diagnostic modality for a given patient requires profound knowledge of both accuracy and limitations in light of the acuity of the clinical scenario.3, 13, 14, 22, 26, 60 This article focuses on the possibilities and emerging advantages of MR imaging with respect to a spectrum of aortic pathologies." @default.
