- W2169199086 abstract "The question of how the release of the pituitary gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), is regulated has long been debated. Thirty years ago, it was proposed that the hypothalamus may release a substance that controls the pituitary's release of the gonado~opins. 19,:~ However, the discovery in the early 1970s of a hypothalamic releasing hormone, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), that could stimulate the release of LH and FSH from the pituitary gland did not completely solve the mystery. We still need to understand how one releasing hormone can control the release of two hormones often found in reciprocal patterns, and how the environment (daylength) can influence the reproductive activity of the mare through control of gonadotropin release. The mare is a seasonal breeder with fertile estrous cycles during the spring and summer; she commonly enters a period ofanestrous during the short days of winter. The synchrony of her period of anestrous with short days indicates that daylength may influence the function of either the pituitary or hypothalamus. In addition, during the breeding season, the gonadotropins are found in cyclic, reciprocal patterns in serum when at certain times, only one gonadotropin is elevated. This review will discuss how both external (i.e.," @default.
