- W2169221709 abstract "It is clearly documented in recent literature that junior doctors should have a system of support in place throughout their training. Trainee anaesthetists have been identified as a group that are regularly exposed to stressful situations [1, 2]. In 1998, the Standing Committee on Postgraduate Medical Education produced a document relating to mentoring as part of the support structure for junior doctors. It stated that ‘there should be local analysis of the need for support for doctors, and local decisions made about the provision of such support’[3]. In 1997 the AAGBI produced a document titled ‘Stress in Anaesthetists’, and outlined mentoring as part of the ‘stress support’ system [4]. A questionnaire was distributed to 100 trainees in the South Thames region and 78 were completed and returned. All 78 trainees thought they were supposed to be allocated a mentor. Sixteen knew who their mentor was and six had met them in this role. Fifty-four of the respondents said they would have benefited from confidential discussion within a ‘mentor-mentee’ environment in their career to date. Many trainees will progress through their career and find the support they need from friends and colleagues. It is the trainees who are not able to do this who will benefit from a confidential mentoring system. Without providing the structure for this system at a local level for all trainees, we are ignoring the recommendations of both the AAGBI and an extensive report commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health." @default.
