- W2169238086 abstract "This descriptive, correlational study aimed to identify psychological characteristics of men who exert both physical and emotional violence against their wives, as compared with men who do not exert it. The variables subjected to study were: communication style in the marital interaction, coping responses, perceived levels of stress and emotional experience of anger. The sample was formed by 97 men residents in Bogota, whose ages ranged between 19 and 60 years old and who had a stable marital relationship at the time of the study. The sample was divided into two groups: 40 participants who reported having exerted violent marital behaviour and 57 who reported not having exerted them. The following tests were administered to these men: Couple’s Assertion Scale (CAS), Coping Styles Inventory (CSI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Novaco’s Anger Scale (NAS). The results showed a larger proportion of aggressive behaviours and less use of assertive behaviours in the men of the violent group. They also showed a higher rate of avoidance and self-blame coping responses, as well as lower scores in behaviours oriented to problem-solving and seeking social support , as compared to their non-violent counterparts. The levels of anger and stress were similar in the two groups. These findings were partially consistent with previous theoretical analysis and research results. They highlight the need to conduct other studies along the same lines to look further into this problem in Colombia." @default.
