- W216945695 abstract "WITH SUMMER JUST AROUND THE CORNER, this is a good time to explore a few of the wonderful opportunities for personal/professional growth, as teachers and singers, which will occur in the coming months. Of course, the events highlighted below barely scratch the surface of many excellent professional development opportunities now available. I hope you all will find time in your busy schedules for a spot of professional enrichment-along with some time out for desperately needed rest and relaxation! Young Artist Programs Elsewhere in this issue of Journal of Singing, you will find an article by Carleen Graham that outlines the activities of the OPERA America Singer Training Forum. Together with Martha Randall, it has been my pleasure to represent NATS in these important discussions. One of the concerns expressed by forum participants is a disconnect that often is present between singing teachers and professional or preprofessional young artist training programs (YAPs). My own students doggedly pursue their preparations for YAP auditions (Santa Fe, Des Moines, Central City, Sarasota, etc.) throughout the year, hoping success in this arena will parlay into a career. In spite of my best efforts, they often don't really understand the level of competition that exists and the standard of excellence required to make it in the business. Our colleagues on the inside of the YAP circuit tell of singers whose audition package includes five arias, each in a different Fach, none of which the singer is truly ready to sing. Most young artist programs screen 700-1000 singers each year, an alarming percentage of whom still have fundamental vocal and performance problems (e.g., poor intonation, inconsistent timbre, and incorrect diction). We singing teachers must do a better job of preparing our students for their professional lives, and that includes having the courage to tell some that they simply are not ready to audition. Summer provides a splendid opportunity to witness the reality of our wonderful training system. Why not incorporate a busman's holiday into part of your vacation this year? Take the time to visit a YAP, explore its facilities, and watch a performance. Most programs will welcome you with open arms, encouraging you to sit in on rehearsals and coaching sessions where the work occurs. Armed with this information, we are better prepared to offer appropriate guidance to our young charges. This is important for all of us; the professional world constantly changes, and what was true when you were in a YAP or on the stage is not necessarily true for current students. Voice Foundation International Symposium: Care of the Professional Voice Do you know about the Voice Foundation? Founded in 1969 by the renowned voice specialist, Wilbur J. Gould, the Voice Foundation has become the premiere organization for voice research and care. Its membership includes physicians, speech/voice therapists, researchers, and singers from nearly every genre and specialization. The annual symposium, now in its 38th year, brings together a hugely diverse population from around the world with one common goal: improving our knowledge of the human voice. Here is your chance to hobnob with the leading researchers and medical voice specialists in the world. You will discover they are real people who are eager to hear your perspectives on the voice, and to learn of your areas of interest. You might even volunteer to participate in a research study. The Symposium's Gala is always a highlight of the event-where else can you hear people like Robert Sataloff, Ingo Titze, and Johan Sundberg take the stage to sing? This year's symposium is scheduled for June 3-7 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Philadelphia. Dormitory housing is available for those of us on tight budgets. For additional information and registration, visit the Voice Foundation's website at www.voicefoundation.org and follow the links to the symposium. …" @default.
