- W2169666283 abstract "“Liver Radioembolization with 90Y Microspheres” describes the treatment of transarterial delivery of radiation particles in management of advanced liver cancers. Anyone involved in the management of hepatocellular carcinoma or advanced metastatic liver disease would understand the challenges faced when patients are no longer candidates for surgical resection or ablative therapies and face dismal prognosis. Radioembolization offers another tool in the fight against advanced liver tumors. Although the underlying concept is based on years of application of hepatic artery embolotherapy with plain particles and or chemoembolization, liver radioembolization has some very unique technical and administrative aspects which require an in-depth study before one can decide to offer or not offer this treatment. The authors are recognized experts who have pioneered the use of this technique and collectively offer a significant amount of experience. The chapters are well organized, stating fundamental concepts of radiation dosimetry, patient selection, vascular anatomy, and initial outcomes. The images are of fairly good quality and further highlight the important concepts emphasized in the text. A review and evaluation of existing literature is included in each chapter. This hardback monogram is handy, contains 15 chapters spread over 163 pages. It is well indexed and the illustrations are of fairly good quality. Not surprisingly, the cancers most discussed in detail in this textbook are hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal cancer metastases to liver; The US Food and Drug Administration approval of the current commercially available Y90 products specifically involves these 2 indications. Other liver tumors are briefly addressed. As experience with use of this treatment gains momentum, the need for accurate reporting of complications including their timeline and long term outcomes will be critical to the survival of radioembolization as a viable treatment option in years to come. The authors should be able to further expand on those areas in future editions. At the time of this review, no single text is available that addresses this treatment in detail. Oncologists from all fields, whether medical, surgical, radiation, or interventional, who have patients that can potentially benefit from liver radioembolization treatment have had to rely on individual scientific publications or on personal communications with more experienced colleagues for information. Although nothing can eliminate the continual need for those methods, this monogram brings together a significant amount of basic information under one roof and should serve as an excellent starting point for practitioners interested in offering this treatment and those considering establishing a new program at their institutions. Bottom Line: Interventional radiologist/oncologist, nuclear medicine and radiation oncology physicians should definitely read this text; it successfully serves its purpose and is highly recommended." @default.
