- W2169744398 abstract "Mandibular movements in phrases spoken by 12 Swedish subjects were optoelectronically recorded and analyzed. An individual movement pattern, which was reproducible when uttering the same phrase, was recognized. Throughout the material, the jaw was moving in a quasi-regular oscillating pattern. The dips occurred in the vowels. Thus, the mandibular movements were closely connected with the syllabic structure. It is suggested that the rate of the movements is close to the mandibular resonance frequency, implying the most economic movement mode, and determining the fundamental syllabic rate. A further support for this hypothesis is the occurrence in most speakers of one—or two—integrated prephrasal dip(s), connected with the inhalation. Within the phrases, the jaw tended to be lowered more in stressed vowels and more closed in labial than in dental consonants. Regardless of stress, the last syllable in most utterances had a noteable jaw lowering. This could be interpreted as an aspect, among others, of a rela..." @default.
