- W2170705411 abstract "Over the past few decades, many families, the bulwark of society, have undergone drastic changes. Once based on reciprocal respect and love among their members, at least ideally, they have been infiltrated and at times pervaded by negative feelings. Parents and children alike show selfishness, disinterest in one another, high levels of hostility, and even physical aggression. At times, a lack of basic morals has fueled the violence, with physical and psychological consequences. A new modus vivendi based on ideas of extreme individualism has undermined the integrity of the family and what should be its strong emotional support for one another (Palermo & Simpson, 1994). Freud (1961) well pointed out that if aggressive human instincts are allowed to express themselves, they create violence not only within society but within the family as well. The changes in the family today go pari passu with other social changes where aggressive instincts seem to dominate. At the basis of the above changes, there is a lack of social maturity, particularly among the younger members of society, those adolescents who not only lack emotional and sexual maturity but are too often unwilling to accept the rules and customs of civil living. In addition, when the family is unstable, these young members cannot easily acquire that sense of respect that should be due to parents. The fathers may not act in a way worthy of a parent. At times, they abandon the family, become too authoritarian and aggressive in their behavior, or show deviant behavior outside the family, at times acting out antisocially to the point of breaking the law. Such situations often promote domestic violence, wherein verbal confrontation degenerates into physical assault. Many mothers, in particular, overwhelmed by this type of situation feel abandoned. A chaotic situation may end in divorce, and children often encounter a new father—a stepfather. These stepfathers are not always welcomed by the children who, at times, have a very negative psychological reaction, especially when the parents’ divorce has been a traumatic one. Over time, they may become very hostile to them. In this issue of the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology (IJOTCC), Kathleen Heide presents the readers with a statistical analysis of U.S. arrest data regarding patricide and step-patricide.
