- W217087099 abstract "This chapter discusses the development of reaching and grasping. It also explores the visual guidance issues. One issue concerns vision and movement: given that one relies extensively on vision to help guide the hand movements, one might expect the mappings between vision and movement to be rigid by the time one reaches adulthood. The available evidence suggests otherwise. There is surprising flexibility in the mappings between the motor system and visual system. Similarly, there is considerable flexibility in the mappings between vision and touch. Why this is and how it is possible are also described in the chapter. Moreover, manual aiming performance is discussed, pri-marily in adults. In manual aiming tasks, subjects typically try to touch a target as quickly as possible. The research question is how quickly the target can be reached depending on its distance from the start position, its size, and other factors. Detailed analyses of aiming movements indicate that the maximum speed of target attainment reflects a sophisticated balance of preprogramming and correction based on feedback." @default.
