- W2170878847 abstract "A 42-year-old man presented with fever, throat pain, submandibular swelling and erythematous pustular lesions involving palms and fingers (Fig. 1) of 5-day duration. Examination revealed an abscess in the submandibular region and the floor of mouth. An incision and drainage of the abscess was done. Blood and pus cultures that we sent were positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The patient was started on intravenous linezolid according to the culture and sensitivity patterns. The patient had continuous fever in spite of the antibiotics. Two days later, he developed pain over the back and numbness followed by weakness of both lower limbs associated with urinary retention. Neurologic examination revealed weakness at the spinal level of D4. Magnetic resonance imaging of spine showed long-segment, peripherally enhancing, altered signal collection noted in the posterior epidural space, extending from D2 to D10 level suggestive of epidural abscess (Fig. 2). An emergency laminectomy and evacuation of epidural abscess was done. The epidural abscess drained was also positive for S. aureus. The patient was continued on intravenous linezolid along with piperacillin/tazobactam for three weeks. Paraplegia was improved with restoration of normal power on discharge of the patient.
