- W2170919917 abstract "Aims: Maternal obesity has long term detrimentalmetabolic effects on offspring that areexacerbated by high fat diet (HFD) consumptionafter weaning. Here we examined the effects ofshort term exercise implemented in young adulthood,on adiposity and hormone profile in thefemale offspring of obese rat mothers. Methods: Adult female Sprague-Dawley ratswere fed either normal chow or HFD ad libitumfor 5 weeks to yield chow and HFD mothers, thenthey were mated with chow fed male rats. Damsconsumed the same diet throughout gestation andlactation. At weaning, female rats from each litterwere separated into two diet groups, chow (C) orHFD (F), and after 7 weeks on their respective diet, half of each group were exercised (voluntary runningwheels) for 5 weeks while the remainder weresedentary. Rats were killed at 15 weeks for bloodand tissue collection. Results: After the 7-week sedentary period, postweaning F diet significantly increased BW inoffspring from both C and F mothers comparedto offspring fed C (both p < 0.05). Exercise for 5weeks significantly decreased BW, RpWAT mass (17%and 35% decrease respectively), plasma leptin andinsulin concentrations in offspring of F mothers consumingF compared to siblings that were sedentary(all p < 0.05). Exercised rats showed a reduction inenergy intake relative to their respective controls. Conclusions: A short period of exercise implementedpost puberty had beneficial effects inimproving the phenotypic profile caused by maternalobesity and postnatal overnutrition." @default.
