Tests that allow early detection may lead to better management or prevention. The paper under evaluation examines whether circulating antiretinal autoantibodies can be used as a diagnostic test for AMD and speculates on their possible involvement in AMD pathogenesis. A novel approach using multivariate analysis allows the comparison of complex western blot autoantibody patterns. Significant differences in autoantibody reactivity to a number of antigens were found between AMD patients and controls. Using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, three of these antigens were identified as α-crystallin, α-enolase and glial fibrillary acidic protein." @default.
