- W2172938819 abstract "The crystal chemistry of five families of hydrated alkaline or pseudo-alkaline (M) borates, MBO2·vH2O, M3B5O9·wH2O, M2B4O7·xH2O, MB3O5·yH2O and MB5O8·zH2O are presented. The main trends of their dehydration process were deduced from experiments carried out on some of them. Generally, upon heating, no lower hydrated borate appeared; the complete dehydration was obtained from 85 to 520 °C, and led to an amorphous anhydrous compound with the same B/M ratio. Upon further heating, a crystallization and, very often, several transitions occurred. Crystal chemistry and polymorphism were examined for several families of anhydrous borates: M3BO3, M3RB2O6 (R=trivalent element), MBO2, M2B4O7, M3B7O12, MB3O5, M5B19O31, M2B8O13, Cs3B13O21, MB5O8 and CsB9O14. Numerous Fundamental Building Blocks (FBBs) were found in all of these borates. Some of them were encountered in both hydrated and anhydrous borates; in the former, the FBBs were often isolated or in chains; in the latter, they generally formed three-dimensional networks. They contained from one to sixty-three boron atoms. However, complex FBBs often are built from shorter borate groups with one (BO3, ▵ or BO4, T), three or five boron atoms, these last two consisting of one and two B3O3 rings, respectively. A few new FBBs containing more linked B3O3 rings were also encountered. The largest FBB was found in Cs3B7O12 that has a structure built from sheets; its shorthand notation is 63:2∞[(7:3▵+4T)+10(5:3▵+2T)+((5:2▵+3T)+(1:T) or (5:3▵+2T)+(1:▵))]." @default.
