- W2173139820 abstract "Multiple organ dysfunction is a major cause of mortality in Intensive Care Unit. Multiple organ dysfunction was considered secondary to a non- controlled infectious process, but up to date has been proved that is secondary to an imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses independently of the initial triggering etiology. Bacterial translocation is a phenomenon presented in the critically ill patient and is characterized by the pass of viable bacteria and/or endotoxins from the intestinal lumen to bloodstream or lymphatic system. Bacterial translocation induces production of pro-inflammatory mediators, amplifying and perpetuating the systemic inflammatory response. Shock, ischemia-reperfusion phenomenon, major abdominal surgery, burns, pancreatitis, intraabdominal hypertension, intestinal inflammatory disease, intestinal obstruction, colonic tumors, prolonged parenteral nutrition, octreotide and narcotics use, are the principal causes of bacterial translocation. The adequate reanimation of shock with crystalloid solution, hydroxietilstarch and dobutamine, glutamine supplemented early enteral nutrition and senoside and lactulose supplementation has been considered useful to reduce the incidence of bacterial translocation and the deleterious effects of this condition." @default.
