- W2173260821 abstract "rainfall and thus one of the principal risks of farming is lessened. However, the water a pplied by irrigation supplies the moisture required by numerous pathogens as well as by their host crops. What makes the subject of irrigation so interesting to the student of crops and their diseases is that the farmer, by applying water, can influence the growth conditions of his crop more fundamentally than by any other means short of growing them under cover. From the point of view of plant disease occurrenc e, irrig atio n occasion ally makes it possible to avoid diseases altogether by growing crops out of season. Thus, as pointed out by Stakman & Harra r (93), potatoes and wheat are commonly grown in Mexico during the dry season under irriga tion, to avoid destructive attacks of late blight and rust . There are also cases in which irr igation renders the host more resistant to a given dise ase, mainly by increasing its vigor. More often, howev er, ir rig ation, by its effects on moisture and temperature conditions, will encour age epidemic development of diseases to a greater or lesser extent. In most of the countries in which irrigation is now practiced, diseases that used to be absent from crops grown without irrigation have become common ever since irrigation, especially in sprinkler form, has been applied. The inten sity of diseases in irrigat ed and unirrigated fields must, how ever, be considered against the background of the far -reachi ng changes that irriga tion has introduced into the general pract ice of farmin g. Thus, the heavy investment involved makes the farmer plant his irr igat ed land with more valuable crops, often grown out-of-season and in improper rotation." @default.
