- W2174089483 abstract "Experiencing Globalization: Religion in Contemporary Contexts contains nine essays which explore different aspects of the ways in which globalisation and religion interact. While the introduction sets the tone of the book by analyzing conflicts that may arise from globalisation—referring to globalisation as a ‘contested process’ (p. 2)—these essays do not tend to describe the tensions of globalising head-on, but rather describe instances of globalisation. Additionally, the title of the book includes the word ‘experience’, but experience is not used as an analytic concept; perhaps the title of the conference where these papers were initially presented better addresses their content: ‘(En)countering Globalizations: Religion in the Contemporary World’. Nevertheless, the authors of the introduction skilfully describe the ways in which globalisation has been discussed and debunked and lay out an exhaustive bibliography on the subject. To some extent, though, the essays in this volume attempt to describe the ways in which religions are contemporary without focusing on what about those contemporary instantiations is necessarily global. Moreover, in some circumstances, there is little discussion of why changes throughout history prove important. Silke Bechler, for example, goes to great lengths to discuss Hindu and Western civilisation as well as the phenotypical differences between an ancient yajña ritual versus a yajña performed by practitioners outside of India today; however, she does not discuss why yajña is the ritual reproduced or what about the changes is significant and does not cite conversation with actual practitioners who might have more insight into why they are performing this ritual. Other articles, similarly, seem to report the status of a contemporary ritual or religious tradition, omitting discussions with practitioners (e.g. Girardo Rodriguez Plasencia), or lack more in-depth analysis beyond mere description (e.g. Thzeng Chi Hsiung & Tsai Chin Chia, Magdalena Karolak & Nikodem Karolak, Tiaukhai Iunn). The conclusion of some articles, it seems, amounts to the fact that traditions change over time." @default.
