• W2174229103 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter explores the theory and the application of the arithmetic approach, which is motivated by and implemented through modern high speed digital computer technology. A conservative arithmetic formulation of the Hamiltonian approach is developed by a discrete calculus of variations by Newtonian mechanics. Other discrete models developed include classical cavity flow, conservative harmonic oscillations, discrete biological population dynamics, biological circularization and gastrulation, atmospheric streaming, ocean wave generation due to earthquakes, and conservative interactions in which the potentials are anisotropic. Radiative transfer on discrete spaces is also examined in the chapter. However, the discretization of certain integral relationships can lead to arithmetic formulations, which are conservative because they conserve discrete energy. However, this “discrete energy” is different from the energy of the continuous formulation. Modeled quantum mechanically, a three-bead-two-rod discrete classical approach, is developed for modeling macromolecules and is applied successfully to the study of polymers. Conservative computer logic and two types of sequential circuitry are already developed, while computer systems analysis theory is being developed for the discrete modeling of both natural and social systems." @default.
