- W2174808231 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the photoreactive lipids for the study of membrane-penetrating toxins. Microbial protein toxins exert their action at the plasma membrane level or at intracellular targets. A gross conformational rearrangement of the toxin molecule may be necessary to account for a change of its solubility from the hydrophilic solvent-water to the hydrophobic solvent-hydrocarbon chains of membrane lipids. This structural transition may involve a limited number of the total population of toxin molecules. Hydrophobic photolabeling with photoactivatable lipids is recently introduced to study lipid-protein interactions. The method is highly sensitive, technically simple, and does not require expensive equipment. Several different parameters can be studied by choosing the appropriate incubation conditions. Photoconversion of the lipid reagent can be performed with a variety of light sources under different conditions. Whatever apparatus is used it is important to check that the conditions used have led to complete photolysis of the reagent and that there is no incorporation of radioactivity because of reactions occurring after the irradiation step." @default.
