- W2175623048 abstract "The Solent-Thames region, as recently defined bycentral government, comprises five counties from northto south: Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire,Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, providing a N-Stransect across Central Southern England. This areaincludes a varied geography, from the Cotswolds in thenorth across the chalklands of the Berkshire Downs andthe heathlands of Hampshire to the south coast. It doesnot follow previous regional divisions of England, instead aiming to provide fresh insights into the pastthrough the grouping of existing administrative units ina new combination. This volume presents the first two phases of theResearch Framework project for this region. The first isan assessment of the current state of archaeologicalknowledge within this region from Palaeolithic times tothe present day, the second a series of research aims andpriorities both for specific periods and for wider crossperiodthemes. It starts with an introduction explainingthe current organisation of information about the past inthe region, and a brief introduction to the environmentalarchaeology of the Solent-Thames area. Following this, two chapters are devoted to each major chronologicalperiod, the first presenting an overview of the resource ascurrently understood, the second a Research Agenda forfuture work. There is then a brief conclusion. In several of the chronological periods, this regioncontains some of the most important and bestresearchedsites, or groups of sites, in England. Theseinclude the remarkable series of early Mesolithic settlementsalong the Kennet valley, the hillfort at Daneburyand its environs, the Roman town of Silchester and thecemetery of Lankhills, and the Saxon and medievaltowns and cities of Southampton, Winchester andOxford. The region has strong royal links in the medievalperiod, resulting in the preservation of Windsor Forestand the New Forest, and Oxford was the capital for KingCharles I during the English Civil War. Arguably themost important ships in the naval history of Britain arehoused at Portsmouth, including the Mary Rose, thebest-preserved Tudor warship in Britain. Among themany country estates, Blenheim Palace, the seat of theDukes of Marlborough, is of international renown. Morerecently, this region has been the focus of politicaldissent during the Cold War, around the nuclear facilitiesat Greenham Common and Upper Heyford. The Resource Assessments are written by eminentperiod specialists, drawing upon county assessmentsprepared by local experts, which can be found online athttp://oxfordarchaeology.com/research-projects-by-name/217-solent-thames-research-framework. The ResearchAgendas are organised under the same headings as theResource Assessments, and the research questions arenumbered for ease of reference. The volume is one of a series covering the whole ofEngland, and is published with the support of EnglishHeritage. It aims to draw together the results ofdeveloper-funded, purely academic and local researchwithin this region, and to place the results in the contextof current research. It is hoped that it will be useful toall those contemplating, planning or undertaking futurearchaeological work within the region." @default.
