Pregnancy in teenage girls is a public health problem, due to the complications presented in the mothers and newborns. Existing studies do not make it clear whether if the evolution of adolescent mothers’ newborns is the same as the evolution on non-adolescent mothers’ babies. To evaluate the perinatal evolution of premature newborns born to teenager mothers and to compare with newborn evolution in the case of non-adolescent mothers. This was a retrospective study. We revised the files of premature newborns born between January 2007 and January 2012. The inclusion criterion was a premature newborn with <34 weeks of gestation, without any congenital malformations. To analyze the results, we made 2 groups: 1) premature newborns of teenager mothers and 2) premature newborns of non-teenage mothers. A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed. We studied 50 preterm newborns, 25 per group. There were no significant differences for respiratory difficulties, bronchopulmonary dysplasia and ventilation days. The only significant difference was for necrotizing enterocolitis of adolescent mothers’ premature babies (P<.02). Mortality was similar in the 2 groups. The perinatal evolution of preterm newborns born to teenage mothers was similar to babies of non-teenage mothers. However, we cannot disregard the fact that a teenage pregnancy affects the future of both the mother and child greatly." @default.
