- W2175958314 abstract "Behavior is influenced by a range of human and nonhuman contexts. Key features of these contexts are proximity, salience, and embeddedness. A primary assumption in the ecological perspective is that human behavior is contextual. This chapter explores how these contexts vary in proximity and complexity and how they can be either human or nonhuman in nature (e.g., family members vs. climate). It discusses how these contexts are interconnected and together can exert a powerful, unacknowledged influence on behavior. Physical contexts reflect factors that can be apprehended by the senses and that would exist whether or not people were present. Counselors tend to underestimate the potential impact of the physical context on their clients. One of the significant contributions of ecological experts to the understanding of human behavior is the discussion of subsystems of human behavior." @default.
