- W2177022327 abstract "Disorders of the penis and testicles are uncommon, but dogs and cats may be presented as a result of genuine disease or trauma or as a result of their owner's unfamiliarity with normal anatomy and physiology. Affected animals may present with minor signs or potentially life-threatening illness, this chapter covers those conditions that are acute and require immediate management. The most common emergency conditions of the penis in the cat and dog are the result of trauma, but also include priapism and paraphimosis. Both priapism and paraphimosis may result from trauma, however they are considered as separate entities. Testicular emergencies are relatively rare, but should include trauma, including nonaccidental injury, testicular torsion, and orchitis with associated scrotal abscess. With prompt assessment and intervention, small animal patients generally have a good prognosis, although surgical procedures which preserve urinary tract function rather than male reproductive anatomy and performance might be required." @default.
