Many experimentally induced animal tumors express tumor-specific transplantation antigens (TSTAs) that can act as targets of an immune response that leads to the rejection of neoplastic cells transplanted onto properly immunized syngeneic hosts. While the most spontaneous occurring neoplasms do not express easily detectable TSTAs, like all other cancers express a variety of tumor-associated differentiation antigens (TADAs), some of which may behave as TSTAs if an immune response can be properly elicited. The multitude of tumor antigens makes it difficult to prepare vaccines that can be used prophylactically. Most vaccines would have to be used therapeutically and be selected on the basis of what antigens a given patient's tumor expresses. Several factors need to be taken into account when deciding what type of tumor vaccine to use, not only with respect to what the target antigen should be, but also how best to present it to the immune system." @default.
