• W2178045364 abstract "A new procedure for optimising stem diameters of highly nematode-susceptible watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) cultivars and highly nematode-resistant wild watermelon (Cucumis africanus) and wild cucumber (C. myriocarpus) seedlings indicated that the two genera had high inter-generic compatibility, with rootstocks retaining their ability to suppress the root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne species). A field study was initiated to determine the influence of inter-generic grafting in Citrullus cultivars onto Cucumis species on survival of inter-grafts, flowering, fruit yield and accumulation of essential nutrient elements under field conditions. At Week four after transplanting, Cucumis africanus and Cucumis myriocarpus rootstocks on cultivars ‘Congo’ and ‘Charleston Gray’ increased flowering by 70-81 % and 96-77 %, respectively. At harvest, 66 days after transplanting, Cucumis rootstocks on cultivars ‘Congo’ and ‘Charleston Gray’ reduced relative impact values by 92-93 % and 94-96 %, respectively; but increased fresh fruit yield by 46-60 % and 48-115 %, respectively; and dry shoot mass by 50-66% and 30-104%, respectively. Rootstocks had no effect on accumulation of essential nutrient elements except for manganese and zinc in leaves of scions. In conclusion, inter-generic grafting has the potential economic benefit on watermelon production, particularly in areas infested with Meloidogyne species, since there are no genotypes resistant to this nematode genus in watermelon cultivars." @default.
