According to a recent review of the literature, 3 to 5 % of the children and teenagers practicing sports resort to drugs and 5 to 15 % of amateurs adult sportsmen. These percentages are higher at the men, at people aged 20–25 years, at the competitors and increase with the level of competitions (especially of high-level). But 1 in 5 % of the sportsmen practising as leisure activities tell to resort to doping. The main classes of drugs used, whatever the age of the user, are stimulants, products enriched in proteins (not forbidden by the IOC), creatine (not forbidden), pain-killers (not forbidden), cannabis, corticoids and anabolic steroids. These consumptions are often associated to that of other substances (alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, cannabis, etc.). All the studies underline the feeling of ease of the users to get whatever drugs they want. The two main sources of supply are health professionals and black market. Potential health hazards, connected to drugs, are not well identified by the users. Furthermore, they are rather often minimized, as by the teenagers as by the adults, even when they have it already felt. These reports explain all the difficulty setting up effective prevention campaigns." @default.
