- W2178728010 abstract "The motorcycle accident literature shows that riders typically do not make use of the full braking capacity of their machines. In view of this and the high motorcycle accident rate, the relationship between brake system feel characteristics and rider/cycle braking performance appears to be a topic requiring urgent experimental investigation. To this end, a variable brake control gradient (vbcg) motorcycle has been developed and is described in this paper. To allow the design to proceed, information on the dynamic response properties of production motorcycle brake systems was required so that the important features of these responses could be reproduced with the vbcg machine. On-road experiments were performed on three instrumented motorcycles with step, sinusoidal and swept-sine modulation of brake lever inputs. The results of these experiments are presented in terms of control gains, hysteresis characteristics; recovery rates and frequency response functions. A simple mathematical model of a typical hydraulic brake system is developed which accounts for the main features of the behaviour observed in the experiments. The steady-state gradients of lever force and lever displacement with deceleration were selected as the primary brake system parameters to be manipulated with the vbcg motorcycle. The means by which these control gradients were made independently variable, using an air-assisted hydraulic brake system, for both the front and rear brakes, is described.
