The presence of tourism has been a catalyst for improving the town's infrastructure, allowing the minority of inhabitants with resources to seek out new economic opportunities. On the other hand, the majority of the poor community members have been increasingly marginalized as a direct result of the inflation and environmental degradation associated with the local development of tourist resorts. Many local inhabitants sense a loss of local hegemony and fear that tourism is disrupting the social fabric of community life. The type of tourism promotion by the Dominican governmental planners is designed to favor large corporations; an active agenda to form concrete linkages with other regional industries such as manufacturing, fishing, or agriculture has yet to be seriously implemented. The tourism industry in the Dominican Republic, while generating much needed revenue for the government, cannot be considered a successful form of national development due to its present inability to decrease economic leakage, minimize environmental destruction, or find long-term solutions to the plight of the Dominican poor." @default.
