- W2181406279 abstract "Surgical procedures are often complex and difficult to train for novice surgeons. Usually, the trainee’s progression is monitored by a senior surgeon who leads the procedure and progressively involves the trainee in the surgery. With such a method, the acquisition of surgery skills is long and depends on the cases the trainee is confronted to. VR multimodal platforms, if adequately designed, can offer an alternative to real environments as they provide interesting features: controlled environment, measure of the user’s performance, display of quantitative feedback. This approach has been applied to the Epker Osteotomy, a Maxillo Facial Surgery (MFS). In this surgery, the efficiency of companionship is limited because vision guided movements are restricted by a small and in depth operating field. The haptic sense is also largely used for critical steps such as the location of anatomic references and safe drilling. A VR training platform has been developed to assist the acquisition of skill during surgical training. The platform offers a simulation of bone drilling procedure in a multimodal environment which includes visual (stereoscopic), audio, tactile and force feedback. In this presentation, we give an overview of the platform focusing on the methodology used to define the technological specifications of the hardware/software implemented on the platform and to identify and analyse the relevant information needed to define an efficient VR training protocol. This research is part of the SKILLS project which deals with the acquisition, storing and transfer of human skill, by means of multimodal interfaces, robotics and virtual environments technologies." @default.
