- W2181408856 abstract "This paper proposes an approach to the analysis of women’s representation which draws upon discourse theory as well as upon literature concerning social movements and the state. The paper is roughly divided into two parts. The first half utilises the case of British abortion politics to highlight some lacunas in research into state feminism, arguing that recent studies have been unable to fully explain why women’s movement campaigners have been successful in defending the 1967 Abortion Act but have not achieved further reform. It concludes that feminist concerns over the ‘deradicalisation’ of women’s movements must be taken seriously even if one disagrees with the conclusion that feminist goals cannot be achieved by working with the state. The second half sets out a framework for doing so. It stresses the need to take into account the governmental rationalities which face women’s movement actors, as well as emphasising a particular conceptualisation of ‘radicalism’." @default.
