- W218141447 abstract "In support of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) conducted a before-and-after customer satisfaction survey of drivers on an urban arterial treated with an adaptive traffic signal system. The objective of the study was to develop and test a methodology for measuring customer satisfaction with roadway quality. In addition, the study would provide reliable data on whether the adaptive signal system resulted in increased satisfaction among drivers of the treatment route. For the study, drivers were surveyed both before and after deployment of the new system, and in each wave of the study drivers were asked to rate their satisfaction with a number of different aspects of their driving experience. In order to be able to attribute changes in satisfaction to the adaptive signal system, a control panel was also used, whereby a panel of drivers was surveyed on a comparable corridor where there was no ITS deployment. From a methodological standpoint, the study findings attest to the robustness of the method developed to measure driver satisfaction. However, the study did not find an increase in driver satisfaction resulting from the adaptive signal system. An independent evaluation conducted by the Georgia Institute of Technology to assess the affects of the adaptive signal system on travel time and delay also found no significant improvement in performance.
