- W2181436641 abstract "Current context Botanic gardens are often seen as places for pupils to learn science rather than geography. Yet plants are often arranged geographically in botanic gardens, especially in specific climatic zones in glasshouses, and have long been seen as places to give children experiences of different environments (Thomas 1971). In addition, there are new approaches being raised about geographical learning. For instance bringing cultural studies into the school context (Morgan 2000) one of whose aims is 'to enable young people ...embrace and understand cultural diversity'. Children's geographies, in particular their participation in an adult world, are exciting much attention (Aitken 2001; Holloway and Valentine 2000) and demand a different way of including children in learning.. Geographers are also looking more closely at the place of institutions such as museums, hospitals, laboratories and gardens as spaces of learning (Livingstone 2003). Geography teachers are in danger of divorcing academic geography from school geography if we do not include these new ideas (Brown and Smith 2000). For many teachers, particularly primary teachers the ideas below are not radically different from current practice but perhaps the thinking behind the tasks will give them a new relevance." @default.
