- W2181668046 abstract "2,3,4 Micromechanical analysis of trabecular bone may also provide further insight into the reported isotropy of its apparent yield strains, 5 which is an intriguing but poorly understood phenomenon. The goal of this study was to improve understanding of the micromechanical failure mechanisms in trabecular bone. Specifically, we sought to 1) quantify the sensitivity of apparent level failure properties to changes in hard tissue yield properties; 2) determine the sensitivity of the micromechanical failure mechanisms to these variations; and 3) compare the micromechanical failure behavior during on-axis vs. transverse loading. Methods Five on-axis bovine tibial trabecular bone specimens were mechanically tested to 0.2% strain without end artifacts. Following testing, high resolution (60 µm) finite element models with 107,594 to 156,984 elements were created from a 5 mm cubic region of the bone. 6 Linear analyses were used to determine the initial effective hard tissue modulus for each specimen from the experimental apparent modulus measurements. 6 The mean (± S.D.) hard tissue modulus for the five specimens was 18.7 ± 3.4 GPa. A finite element code which incorporated material nonlinearity was used to simulate yielding of the specimens. The trabecular hard tissue was modeled as a bilinear elastic solid with a principal strain yield criterion, with a higher yield strain in compression than in tension. The post-yield modulus was set to 5% of the initial modulus, based qualitatively on cortical bone. Two sets of analyses were performed. First, one specimen was used to study the sensitivity of the failure behavior to the assumed hard tissue yield strains. Apparent level on-axis tensile and compressive loading models were solved for each of nine combinations of hard tissue yield strains. These data were also used to determine optimal hard tissue yield strains for on-axis loading based on results from a previous study. 4" @default.
