- W2181936503 abstract "As we look to future teams of humans and robots, we try to identify the right roles for machines, and spot the missing technologies that would make additional roles possible. Some early lessons have been learned at NASA, where robots are being developed to work along side suited crew members in space. To date, the robotic roles have been limited to positioning a person (astronaut on the end of a large robot crane) or remote inspection using free flyers. Robots working in these roles have proven their value to the EVA teams, and we are optimistic that this is just a beginning. We are pushing this frontier in several dimensions. The crane and free flyer examples have involved a high degree of human interaction for teleoperated control, and we would like the machines to be more self reliant for logistical and telemetry reasons. We would like to expand the functions from locomotion and inspection to value added tasks such as manipulation of objects and working with tools. And we want the machines to be safe and easy to use. To meet these goals we will need to change the nature of the interactions between members of the team. A series of experiments will be reviewed where the highly dexterous Robonaut systems were combined with human teammates and tested performing specific, manual dexterity tasks. Key variables in the experiments will be described to bound the experience, and conclusions will be drawn that are limited to manipulative interaction tasks and the specific forms of communication that were allowed between the humans and their robot assistants. The current state of the art will be shown to fall far short of our goals for effective teams. But these experiences will be presented to help the community identify why and where the gaps exists." @default.
