- W2181991180 abstract "Sepsis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients and is responsible for much healthcare expenditure. The mortality rate remains high despite investment into combating the condition, although much is now known about its pathophysiology and mediators. Recent treatment guidelines have reinforced the importance of early goal-directed therapy, and drotrecogin alfa (activated) has been shown to be an effective adjunctive therapy. Extracorporeal blood purification techniques offer a possible new approach, although the clinical benefits that have been claimed are probably secondary to the efficient elimination of septic mediators. Although limited in number and design, animal and human studies of extracorporal therapies have produced promising results. The rationale for the use of these techniques is sound, but large well-conducted studies are required to demonstrate their validity in sepsis. Advances in" @default.
