- W2182017074 abstract "One of the key features of the new economy is the change from individual to collective efficiency. The main determinant for successful delivery of goods and services demanded by global or regional markets is the joint performance of entrepreneuri al alliances, production chains or industrial clusters. The aim of this paper is to analyse how firms are redefining their strategies and organisations, and how they are looking for new relationships to survive and compete in the globalised economy, focusing on the recent evolution of industry in Brazil. Based on a series of case studies and a large survey (490 respondents), it analyses how the new texture of transnational s' subsidiaries and local enterprises is being shaped. The main conclusions point to a widespread formation of productive chains usually led by TNC's subsidiaries, a relatively scarce participation of local firms in entrepreneuri al alliances, and a significant amount of still isolated firms, unable to respond to the new competition requirements. 1. Presentation The increasing rate of business globalisation is accelerating the rate of change concerning the way that production of goods and services is designed and implemented. Leaving behind the hegemonic and universalistic conception of large scale Fordist-Taylorist factories, we are witnessing the emerging of a complex system of new concepts and formulas for the organisation of business in general and the Manufacturing function in particular.(Shi and Gregory, 1998; Bennett, 1999) The main point of this article is the analysis of the new industrial organisation based on the following lines of thinking: • in the very intense and deep restructuring of enterprises and their businesses, competitiveness requires collective efficiency; very rarely will a self-sufficien t firm succeed in the current market conditions; firms will have to focus on their core competences and look for partners to complement their resources and realise their strategies; • distinct types of entrepreneurial arrangements are currently being observed; these arrangements are the outcome of historical processes and current entrepreneurial and businesses decisions; we consider that there are three of them, out of which we will be basically discussing two: production chains and alliances. • the access to those distinct types of entrepreneuri al arrangements is not free or random; it depends on a series of businesses characteristics and resources of the firm under consideration; basically it depends on the competences developed by the firm and its strategic intent" @default.
