- W2182032304 abstract "For much of the twentieth century university and WEA adult education was centred on ‘workers education’, particularly with the large industrial unions ‐ coal-mining, engineering, steel and so on. The provision was almost exclusively male in every sense: the students and the staff, and the trade union organisations themselves, certainly; but also the culture and assumptions which underlay the whole experience. All this changed from the late 1960s: adult education interacted with the ‘new wave’ women’s movement, and with the growth of community development and community education, to engage with a new, more progressive environment. Since then in a whole variety of ways gender has been a prominent theme in adult education theory and practice. Rebecca O’Rourke reflects on a rich experience in this field and particularly upon the contemporary concentration upon the crisis of masculinity ‐ or more colloquially ‘the problem of men’. This is a fascinating and thoughtful analysis by an adult educator of long and varied involvement with the field. The issues appear more complex the more that they are examined and deconstructed; but it remains clear that despite all the emphases upon men ‐ and, as Rebecca says, the problems as they are perceived refer only to low skill, deprived background, working class men ‐ the structures of authority in society and the accompanying culture remain strongly male in orientation." @default.
