- W2182276251 abstract "Experts’ summary: Abbasi and coworkers provide an anatomic description of a previously undocumented unilateral lumbar vein arising posteriorly from the retrohepatic inferior vena cava (IVC). The authors detail this vessel following a series of cadaveric dissections. This work was prompted by the authors’ observation of this unusual anatomic variant during cases of IVC tumor thrombectomy. The authors assert that a description of lumbar vessels cephalad to the level of the renal veins is absent from contemporary surgical atlases. In total, 49 dissections were performed (29 male and 20 female), 19 (38.8%) of which demonstrated an unpaired lumbar vein proximal to the level of the renal veins. This anomalous vessel was located a mean plus or minus standard deviation of 7.4 0.6 cm proximal to the right renal vein and had amean luminal diameter of 3.7 1.6 mm. A surprisingly high percentage (78.9%) of cadavers with this variant were male. The authors state that in their operative experience, they have occasionally encountered bleeding during IVC tumor thrombectomy following assumed proximal control of the IVC. It is hypothesized that this bleeding was due to the underrecognition of this anatomic variant. The authors state that to avoid such bleeding, early vascular control should be achieved with either circumferential control of the IVC or with an intraluminal Fogarty balloon." @default.
