- W2182394293 abstract "SUMMARY Systolic timeintervals derived fromDoppler velocimetry measurementswere used instead ofdirect pulmonary tosystemic flow ratio measurements in adults withatrial septal defect to quantify left toright atrial shunts. Thirteen normal subjects and25patients withuncomplicated atrial septal defect confirmed bycardiac catheterisation were studied. Thepulmonary tosystemic flow ratio (Qp:Qs) expressing theshunt size was determined bytheFickmethod; innormal subjects theQp:Qsratio wasassumed tobeequal to10. Thepulsed Doppler analogue velocity recording of flow inthepulmonary arteryandtheascending aortawas taken asindicating theejection timeof eachventricle andtheQ waveoftheelectrocardiogram asindicating theonsetofsystole. Fromthese measurements theratios ofthepre-ejection periods totheejection times (haemodynamic ratio) were calculated foreachventricle andtheratios ofeachvariable (pre-ejection period, ejection time, and haemodynamic ratio) werecalculated forbothventricles. Significant differences werefound between thenormal subjects andthepatients withatrial septal defect forall these ratios. WhentheDoppler findings andtheFick measurementsofQp:Qs werecompared thebest linear correlation coefficient wasfortheleft toright haemodynamic ratio. Itisconcluded that the useofaratio involving several variables, such asthepre-ejection period andtheejection timeforbothventricles, improves the reliability ofthis method, which appearstobeapplicable inadults." @default.
